HZB International Summer Student Program 2026 in Berlin | Paid Internship

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) invites international and local undergraduate students to apply for the prestigious eight-week HZB Summer Student Program (ISSP) in Germany. This paid internship offers a unique research opportunity for just 20 selected students to work under the guidance of HZB scientists.

Key Program Highlights

  • Duration: Eight weeks, from July 6 to August 28, 2026.
  • Location: HZB campuses in Berlin, Germany.
  • Focus Areas: Research is concentrated in fields such as Photon Science, Photovoltaics, Solar Energy, Accelerators, Electrochemical Energy Storage, Quantum and Functional Materials, and more, offering a chance to contribute to solutions for climate change.
  • Experience: Participants gain invaluable hands-on experience in modern laboratories, working on their chosen project, and utilizing advanced scientific equipment.
  • Activities: The program includes tours of HZB research centers like the BESSY II accelerator, visits to other Berlin research facilities, and workshops on science communication and entrepreneurship. The program concludes with a scientific poster presentation.
  • Networking: It is an excellent opportunity for cross-cultural exposure and networking with peers and experts from around the world.

Financial Benefits and Support

This is a paid summer program with financial support provided to participants:

  • Allowance: External participants receive a total gross allowance of €1,900. Students from universities in Berlin and Potsdam receive €1,000 (gross).
  • Travel Reimbursement: Up to 75% of travel costs between Berlin and the participant’s residence will be reimbursed, with a maximum of €200 for EU countries and €800 for non-EU countries.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an undergraduate student in fields such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Engineering, Life Sciences, or Environmental Sciences.
  • Have completed at least four semesters (two years) in their university degree program.
  • Be currently enrolled in their university during the HZB program.
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation with the application.
